The project involved the extension and conversion of a former machining factory into an Alpex cultural center. Having been commissioned to carry out the complete assignment, we raised all the heritage issues inherent in the major transformation of an existing building designated as a local heritage site. This new cultural center is part of a wider effort to renovate the heart of the town of Scionzier. A large open space opens up between the building and the Town Hall so that, despite itself, the gable façade has become the main facade. It now closes off the new town-centre square. A generous entrance porch consisting of a colonnade made of solid Hauteville stone has reshaped the facade, designated the new entrance and signaling the building’s new public function. Inside, the black service areas in the two main exhibition rooms catch the eye. The low-arched bays allow plenty of light to enter and offer great flexibility in how the space is used. The extension, required by the project requirements, slides along the length of the building. Expressing a real sense of calm, only the saw-tooth roof, which allows constant light to enter the temporary exhibition room, is visible from the square.
